Lake Anna Striper Reports
2018

April 20, 2018
Reported by Charlie Taylor Fishing

Striper fishing is best early and late in the day, with Sassy Shads and Bass Assassins, fished on the flats adjacent to main channel points.

I dipped the boat for the first time yesterday with the wife, but we were only out there from 2-4 pm. Pulled primarily around the Stubbs area, but couldn't get anything to go. Water temp was 53 and I was marking schools of what I'm pretty sure were stripers in 25-30' off of steep banks.

Had a buddy go out with me today. Caught 6 keepers and one throw back. Big fish was 31.5" !

Stripers are active around the splits and the mouth of Contrary Creek. Best time is dawn and dusk on bucktails and noisy topwater baits.

My dad and I pulled gizzard shad and a couple herring behind planer boards. We started in Terry's Run fishing upstream from Foremost on the right side for about 1/2 mile without a strike. Then we worked our way downstream working the opposite side. I caught a 24" striper on a gizzard shad pretty much where Foremost Run and Terry's Run meet. We continued to pull baits all the way out of Terry's Run and worked our way up the Pamunkey.

My dad occasionally would cast a blue/orange Smithwick jerkbait if he saw a spot along the shoreline he liked. He had one largemouth follow the bait to the boat. A few casts later he hooked up with a largemouth but it quickly came unhooked. Later he caught a 15" striper. As I was unhooking it for him, one of the planers with a herring behind it hooked up and he reeled in a fat 22" wiper. We went and caught some more gizzard shad and pulled them around pretty far up in the Pamunkey for a couple hours without any strikes. We called it a day around 2:00.

I have no idea what the water temperature was because my fishfinder isn't working.
The keeper striper was in about 15' of water. The small striper and wiper were on a point in about 4' of water.

Can't wait to get back out there.

Stripers are hitting four inch pearl colored Sassy Shads in the Dyke Three area and in the "S" turns in the Pamunkey. Crappie are hitting small minnows and jigs around boat docks and beaver lodges.

Striper fishing is inconsistent, with most of the fish being taken uplake, as the fish are staging their false spawning run. Best baits are chartreuse Sassy Shads, Storm swim baits and living rubber bucktails.

Got out for a little bit in the sleet today to pic up one more keeper. They were stacked up but refused to eat.

Well, got the new boat broken in on Wednesday and fished Thursday and Friday in these crazy 20-25 MPH winds. Found lots of stripers on the graph, but few wanted to eat. Ended up with one keeper (21.5") on Thursday.

Friday's winds were unforgiving. Anchor lock on my TM ended up spinning all around and breaking the transducer cable to my new Hook2 9" on the bow......that will cost me $ . Found them stacked up above Dillards but would not bite. Stuck it out there for 2 hours putting it right in front of their noses until 2 latched on. First one was an 18" fat throwback. Second one went 23.5" and FAT . Full of roe when I filleted it at the dock. Saw GV out there both days at his crappie hole.

Will try again Saturday morning before the next storm rolls in.....supposed to be calm in the morning.

Stripers are beginning to bite regularly at Dyke Three and Pigeon Run Creek. Early and late in the day, fish Zara Spooks or Cordell Redfins. Switch to four inch pearl colored Sassy Shads, live shad or bucktails at mid-day.

Friday we had quite the storm blow through and the bad effects of the storm lingered for a few day afterwards.

These tough guys wanted to go so I obliged them. The main factor in where to fish was the weather.

The lake is muddy up lake, the water temperatures dropped 6 degrees, Bluebird skies and the wind was hateful. The wind trumped all the other adverse conditions so I opted to fish out of the wind as much as possible so I could at least have some control of the boat and also not freeze my clients.

We worked hard to catch what we did, fish simply did not want to eat and most of our hits were short. Guess who caught most of the fish?

So the winds kept us off the water saturday, but we manned up on sunday and got out pre-dawn. Launched at hunters landing (trying to get out of the wind) and hung a light at Stubbs. After 40 minutes... NOTHING on sonar. Threw twice and got 1 herring... not sure if its the wind, turbidity, or bait kill. Since the sun was peeking out we Decided to try for smaller gizzards and found them thick up the lake from Dillards bridge. Caught a few sets worth but didnt see any sign of stripers north of hunter’s landing... so pulled the area between dillards and stubbs. Popped a 18” wiper on a shad and found several schools on the graph, but no more bites. Finally got beat up by the wind and headed in about 1100... tough day but better than working!
